Responding Homophobic Arguments

It's all over the internet. The US Supreme Court has ruled that same sex marriage is legal through out the states. It is a big step forward for equality for people in the US. The news and spirit has also reached where I live and becoming a very hot topic. The argument of for and against the notion spread like wild fire in the net. One of the most circulated post I saw was this video.


Uploaded by a conservative news channel, and as you would expect from it, it delivers their argument against the new law. If you haven't watch the video, please take your time to play the video, cause this post will be about me addressing their points. So let's start!

1. Homosexual is not natural, so we must oppose it.
If you are debating with a conservative about gay rights, 80% of the time they will open with this argument. This is one of the most commonly used argument used against homosexuals, that homosexual behavior is not natural, therefore we should ban it. The video even go as far as to define male-female marriage as "natural marriage" and compare it with same sex marriage as if it isn't natural.


'This understanding of Marriage is rooted in the biological facts of nature', so then it is logical to exclude gay relationship. Really? Well, let's look at the facts. Homosexual behavior is found in hundreds of species; it has been observed in dolphins, lions, dogs, cats, elephants, and several species of primates, to mention a few. A research in identical twin human showed that if one twin is a gay, the other twin has a large chance of having it too, indicating that homosexual trait is governed by the gene. And if it's controlled by the gene, it is as natural as looking for food when we are hungry. Blaming a person of something coded in their gene, which they have no say in, is like blaming a children born with cancer or down syndrome, it is downright immoral.

I've made my point that being gay is natural, and now I'm going to say why it doesn't matter. Why people are so hype about the "naturality" of things is something I don't understand. The drugs you ate when you are sick is not natural. The car you drive is not natural. The internet and the gadgets you never let go off is not natural. The air temperature your skin is sensing while you are reading this is not natural. Almost everything in our society isn't natural! You want natural? Then you should live naked in the deep jungle eating berries and hunting squirrels.

2. Male-Female marriage creates children, same sex marriage doesn't. Male-Female marriage wins.
Whoever uses this argument simply doesn't get the current issue. The human population has now reached the level of seven billion lives and keep adding. Each person takes up resources: that is food, energy, and material. The more human we add to this planet, the more resource we need; and the thing is the resource is finite. One of the main reason why we are facing with food and energy crisis is population, there's simply too many of us than the planet can sustain. Humans, compared to other species, are greedy, no species requires as much as resource like us. And it is other species and the planet itself who pay for our greed.

Gay couples don't make children. Yes. And we should thank them instead.

3. Comparing Homosexual to Incest and Pedophilia



There is actually an evolutionary reason why we frown upon incestuous behavior. A mating between two closely related individuals would result in a considerable chance of having a genetically defected offspring. Million years of evolution have embedded in our brains a taboo in incestuous relationship because of this reason, which now we considered as moral rule not to have sexual relationship with our siblings.

We dislike pedophiles because, by definition, pedophiles are people who exploit children's innocent minds and their inability to guard themselves for sexual pleasure. The children who had experience of being molested in their childhood would carry psychological trauma.

Unlike those two mentioned above, homosexual relationship carry no harmful element. Homosexual relationship is a based on mutual agreement between to thinking persons. It is identical to any relationship you know, only differs in who's in the relationship. No one is forced or manipulated into it, and it certainly doesn't produce offspring with health issues. I don't see how you can make the connection between homosexual, with incest and pedophilia. It just doesn't make sense.

4. We know statistically that Natural Marriage creates the best possible family for children.


Seriously, what statistic?! Where do you think the abandoned children in the children shelter come from?

5. Our freedom of speech is gagged and religious freedom overruled.


The video then uses some case of society's reaction on homophobia for their notion. Clever.

We used to condemn lefty people. We used to think that people who uses left hand are the devil servants. But we grew out of it, we mature up. Now, would you want to work with a man who bullies coworker just because he's a lefty? No, because nobody wants to work with an asshole. We are done with left hand thing, now we have another case: homophobia. And the firing of the sports anchor and the consultant for being homophobes is the proof that the society is growing out of it.


And there's no such thing as religious freedom. You have the freedom to have a religion, but not in forcing your religious values on others. Religious freedom is just another word for bigotry. Making another word for it is just another marketing trick from the bigots.

6. The law already treats everyone equally!


This is the part where I just stare at the screen, speechless because of the stupidity of the point it was trying to make.

When it comes to individual relationship, I prefer the government don't get involved at all. But if it must, then it should treat all in an equal manner.
